Posted on: Wednesday, 16 November 2005, 12:00 CST

Text of report entitled: "Arak city's Bird flu not communicable to human being" published by Iranian newspaper Aftab-e Yazd website on 16 November

The bird flu that has recently spread in Arak killing 14,000 chickens is of H9 type and it is not dangerous to human being. Only H5 type of bird flu is only dangerous to humans and no cases of this type of bird flu have so far been observed in Iran.

Behruz Yasami, the public opinion director of State Veterinary Organization, announced the news and told the Fars News Agency: The H9 type of bird flu has been present in Iran since 1377 [year starting 21 March 1998] and every now and then has killed some birds in some parts of Iran. This disease is not dangerous to human being and is under no circumstances transferred to mankind.

He added: The only type of bird flu that may be transferred to human being is H5N1, which is the acute and controversial type of the disease. Fortunately, no such cases have been observed in Iran. Yasami said: The reason for the high fatality rate in Arak has been the concurrent spread of H9 bird flu and Newcastle disease in the poultry farms in Arak. Otherwise, the losses inflicted by the disease are usually less than this.
