Quotes

Al-Quds: [From editorial] "It is really sad that the Israeli authorities have stooped so low in humiliating the Palestinians [including schoolchildren at checkpoints]. This is unprecedented, and these authorities know very well that the Palestinians deserve to be treated better and with respect since they are a neighbour they cannot avoid. With such practices, the Israeli authorities are destroying the possibility of regaining the Palestinians' trust in their credibility and intentions about the peace process..."

[From commentary by Naji Sharab] "We have to admit that although the Palestinian Authority [PA] bears the brunt of responsibility for the lawlessness, there is a collective responsibility [that all citizens bear]. The fundamental purpose for the PA is to provide the citizens with security and stability. This cannot be achieved through the use of force alone but through a number of measures including the eradication of corruption in its institutions so that it regains its prestige and credibility..."

Al-Hayat al-Jadidah: [From commentary by Hasan al-Kashif] "There is no reason to amend the elections law now. The Legislative Council members had all the time in the world to think and discuss it before it was passed. It is strange that a few members have suggested turning the whole of the Palestinian territories into one constituency and adopting a proportional elections system... If some of the MPs think they can solve a problem facing Fatah and are trying to tailor a solution for it, they are wrong..."

[From commentary by Ahmad Dahbur] "The miserable US denial that [George] Bush consulted [British Prime Minister Tony] Blair on his intention to bomb Al-Jazeera's offices and the British judicial threat to the Daily Mirror emphasize the opposite... Both rulers wouldn't be so self-assured and look so amazed had the paper not submitted to the threats... Will Bush cancel the world to cancel the facts about his war on the free press represented by Al-Jazeera and its sister stations?..."

Al-Ayyam: [From commentary by Talal Awkal] "What is happening in Israel whether it is a crisis or a coup d'etat will be at the expense of the Palestinians who are the punch bag. [Israeli Prime Minister Ariel] Sharon will continue his aggression in order to be more patriotic than his Likud rivals who share the same hard-line policies. Because the Palestinian and Israeli policies are extremely intertwined, the Palestinians should play an effective role in what is happening by both rebuilding the Palestinian home and leaving an impact on the Israeli scene".

[From commentary by Abd-al-Lah Awad] "A corrupt person is not only someone who takes bribes or steals or even abuses his position and covers up corruption. We are all corrupt because we remain silent in the face of corruption. Whoever sees a thief and remains motionless becomes an accessory... Our silence has led us to this situation of failure and allowed everyone to interfere in our affairs under the banner of reform. This has turned our life into hell and pushed us to the brink of moral collapse with only remnants of our social legacy preventing us from falling..."
