Rain, Snow Forecast Potent System to Push Mild Weather Out

Western Nebraska's weather this weekend will turn from mild to wet.

Temperatures today should hit the upper 50s across a wide swath of western Nebraska, according to Josh Boustead of the National Weather Service in Valley, Neb.

"No real significant problems" were forecast for today, he said.

But clouds are forecast to build tonight, with temperatures descending to the upper 20s.

A fairly potent weather system is expected to move from west to east Sunday, bringing to western Nebraska clouds, rain and possibly some snow in the morning.

By afternoon the rain is forecast to turn to snow in much of western Nebraska, with temperatures falling from the upper 30s in the morning to the lower 30s through the afternoon.

Despite the expectation of rain and snow, Thanksgiving weekend travelers shouldn't face major difficulties on Midlands roadways.

Most should be home before significant snowfall, said Ken Reeves of AccuWeather, The World-Herald's weather consultant.

"There will be some rain around the (Omaha) area Sunday, and I think there will be a significant snowfall later Sunday and Monday," Reeves said.

The metro area could see up to a couple of inches of snow by Monday, he said.

Much of central Nebraska can expect a similar amount of snow. But some areas could get much more, Reeves said.

He predicted up to a foot of snow Monday in parts of central and northeastern Nebraska. The biggest snowfall is expected in a 70- to 100-mile area east of the Panhandle.

The low tonight in the metro area is expected to be 31. Highs today will be in the 50s across Nebraska and western Iowa.

Sunday will bring temperatures in the 40s, with the mercury dipping below freezing late at night.

World-Herald staff writer Tim Elfrink contributed to this report.
