Text of report by Iraqi Al-Sharqiyah TV on 27 November
Former Iraqi Prime Minister Iyad Allawi compared human rights conditions in the country during the reign of deposed President Saddam Husayn to that of the current phase, especially in prisons and detention centres. He said it is now worse than before.
Allawi accused those responsible for the Interior Ministry prisons and detention centres of subjecting prisoners to torture and even killing them during the interrogation process.
He said he does not blame the minister himself, but those who run the secret centres and are involved in the liquidation process that took place. He accused unspecified religious courts of implementing Islamic laws in the trials and executions of individuals.
The former Iraqi prime minister called for speed in putting an end to these violations, before what he termed as the phenomenon of evil spreads and moves to the country's ministries and other government structures.
He described Iraq as the central area of the region, and warned that if its conditions do not become stable this would threaten the security of Europe and the United States.
