Gary Bergeron, 43, of Lowell, a victim of sexual abuse by a priest, applauded the efforts of other victims from California who delivered a letter to the Vatican yesterday calling on Pope Benedict XVI to apologize for clergy abuse and dismiss officials involved in covering up the scandal.
"Any attempt to engage in dialogue about this topic is important until the Vatican is willing to maintain an open and honest dialogue with clergy abuse survivors, it furthers our point that they truly don't undestand the depth of what is happening," Bergeron said.
Bergerson traveled to the Vatican after Cardinal Bernard Law's resignation two years ago, demanding to meet with Pope John Paul II about clergy abuse.
Along with Bergerson's father, Eddie, and another abuse survivor, Bernie McDaid of Salem, Gary met with Monsignor James Green, head of the Vatican Secretary of State's office.
"I think it's important for society to continue to engage and educate itself. The epicenter of this tragedy was the Catholic Church, and they are continuing to miss an oportunity with this to teach society," Bergeron said.
