Hungary registers 99 cases of HIV infection in first nine months
BUDAPEST, Nov. 30 (Xinhua) -- Hungary registered 99 cases of HIV infection in the first nine months of 2005, according to statistics released by the Hungarian government on Wednesday.
The country's Public Health Commissioner Mihaly Kokeny said the number of HIV-infected people rose only slightly from the same period last year.
He explained the rise could be a result of rising synthetic drug abuse or more people volunteering for anonymous screening, which makes cases more transparent.
Hungary's AIDS prevention program was launched last year, with priorities on preventive education at schools and confidential testing and counseling.
The government also invested 256,000 euros (302,000 US dollars) in an experimental project, operating mobile HIV screening buses which provide regular testing for sex workers.
Up until December last year, the country's National Center for Epidemiology (NCE) has recorded 1,176 HIV-positive cases since 1985 when the screening began.
Based on one of its report, 85 percent of Hungary's HIV positive are men and 15 percent women.
There are currently 520 people in Hungary who receive treatment for HIV.
