UK Straw Wants "Satisfactory Settlement" on Iran's Nuclear Programme - Agency

London, 1 December: Foreign Secretary Jack Straw has spoken of continuing problems in trying to reach a diplomatic solution to concerns about Iran's nuclear programme, but remains convinced it must be resolved through talks.

"The Iranian dossier is one of the most difficult ones we have to handle, both before, and now, and for the future," Straw said Wednesday [1 December].

"The EU-E3 negotiations in my judgment are the only way forward to try and reach a satisfactory settlement with the government of Iran," he told a joint news conference in London with his Italian counterpart Gianfranco Fini.

His comments come after Britain, France and Germany, which has been leading negotiations, sent a letter to Iran last weekend to offer to resume talks that have been deadlocked over the past three months.

Straw confirmed that Iran was discussed during his meeting with Fini as well as the Middle East peace process, the situation in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The EU is seeking to resume negotiations with Iran based upon a Russian proposal to allow uranium conversation to go ahead at a Esfahan plant but to develop enrichment at a joint plant to be built in Russia.

British Ambassador to Tehran Richard Dalton has also indicated that the EU may be willing to improve its cooperation offer with Iran under the Paris Agreement aimed at reaching long-term arrangements on Iran's nuclear programme.
