Belgrade, 12 December 2005: International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) indictee Ratko Mladic has been located and will be arrested and extradited to the ICTY by the end of the year, Vecernje Novosti said quoting an unnamed Serbian government source. Tomorrow's [13 December] issue of Vecernje Novosti says that the authorities know where the wartime commander of Army of the Serb Republic is located, only that he would not be arrested by 15 December, as ICTY Chief Prosecutor Carla Del Ponte has demanded of the Serbian authorities, but that he would extradited by New Year.
The same source added that the arrest of Croatian General Ante Gotovina, accused of war crimes against Serbs in Croatia, and the transfer of secret documents to the ICTY were also an introduction into the arrest and extradition of Mladic.
In a statement to Vecernje Novosti, Aleksandar Simic, adviser to Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica, expressed hope that the problems in arresting Mladic would soon be resolved and that Serbia would not suffer the international community's sanctions if Mladic were not arrested within the given deadline.
The adviser to the Serbian president, Jovan Simic, said in a statement to Vecernje Novosti that the Serbian Government had finally seriously undertaken to arrest Mladic but he also said that Serbia had no more time to lose regarding the issue of arresting one of the most notorious ICTY fugitives.
