Text of report by pro-Hamas Palestinian Information Centre website on 17 December
An official Hamas source made the following statement:
Commenting on the statement made by the US House of Representatives, which calls on PNA [Palestinian National Authority] Chairman Mahmud Abbas to declare his intention about dismantling what the House of Representatives described as terrorist organizations, meaning the mujahidin Palestinian resistance factions led by Hamas, and linking this issue to the loss of US support and financial assistance if Hamas is allowed to participate in the legislative elections next month [sentence incomplete as received].
This stand coincides with the statement made by the US State Department that criticized Hamas participation in the municipal elections.
We in Hamas emphasize the following:
1. Condemn and denounce these rude US statements and positions and consider them a blatant interference in the internal Palestinian affairs.
2. These positions expose the double standards of the US Administration and the falseness of its demands to implement democracy because the democracy that is allowed is the one that goes in line with the US desires and interests.
3. We were hoping that the PNA would respond to these latest US positions, since they encroach on the Palestinian sovereignty, because remaining silent towards these interferences encourages going further in such stands. We also ask the PNA to reject the US dictates and conditions attached to any US assistance.
4. The latest US positions have coincided with the victory achieved by Hamas lists through the ballot boxes in the municipal elections in the Palestinian territories, something that may have annoyed this administration as a result of this great victory and the popular support for the option of resistance and reform adopted by Hamas.
