Seoul, 10 January: President Roh Moo-hyun said on Tuesday [10 January] that he will devote his remaining two years in office to preparations for the future, expecting South Korea to attain a per- capita income of 50,000 US dollars by 2030. "During my remaining two years (in office), I will actively prepare for the future, with the years 2030 and even 2050 in mind," the president said in a New Year's meeting with local women leaders.

"Women's role will continue to grow in helping the economy develop to a per-capita income of 50,000 dollars by 2030. By then, the government will be able to pay for 90 per cent of private childcare expenses to better help women's economic activities," he said.

The president said last week that the coming decade is vital to South Korea's bid to attain a per-capita income of 30,000 US dollars. "The next 10 years are very important to the national economy as (the country's) rapidly aging society poses a threat to its economic growth potential," the president said.
