Text of report by Iraqi Al-Sharqiyah TV on 15 January
A source close to the Higher Criminal Court that is trying former Iraqi President Saddam Husayn said today that Judge Rizgar Muhammad Amin, who is heading the panel, has tendered his resignation but the resignation has not been accepted.
The source said that Amin had tendered his resignation just before Id al-Adha [Muslim festival] which began on 10 January. The source said that the resignation had not been accepted so far and that efforts were being made to convince him to rescind his decision and to stay in office.
The source said the resignation had come in response to criticism made by politicians on his leniency in running the court sessions, in which Saddam Husayn and seven of his aides are being tried. The trial is scheduled to be resumed on 24 January on the case of Al- Dujayl for the incidents that took place there after the assassination attempt on Saddam Husayn in 1982.
In a related issue, Khalil al-Dulaymi, the head of the defence panel of Saddam, said that the panel has warned a long time ago of the political pressure that damaged the court's independence and honesty. He added that he expect an increase in political pressure on the court after it had turned into what he called a farce.
