Albanian Government Expresses Support for US, EU on Iran Nuclear Issue

Posted on: Sunday, 15 January 2006, 15:00 CST

Text of unattributed report, "Berisha supports Rice over Iran", published by Albanian newspaper Koha Jone on 15 January

Albania supports the declaration of Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and the decision of the European foreign ministerial troika and the EU three days ago to call an emergency meeting of the committee board of the International Atomic Energy Agency [IAEA], which should report to the UN Security Council on Iran's failure to comply with the security measures.

"Iran should not be tolerated in resuming its uranium enrichment programme, because the threat of an Iran equipped with nuclear weapons would cause instability in the region and collective global security," an official statement of the Albanian government said.

It said, among other things, that Albania "joins the EU and the other members of the international community in condemning the Iranian government for the deterioration of the situation on this issue" and that it supports fully the multilateral efforts the international community has undertaken or will undertake to persuade Iran to change its course and comply fully with all the IAEA resolutions.

"An Iran integrated into the international community would be in the interest of the Iranian people, peace and common global security," the declaration of the Albanian government said in conclusion.
