Text of report by Iraqi Al-Sharqiyah TV on 22 January
Three Iraqi soldiers were killed and four others injured when the US Army opened fire at four vehicles carrying Iraqi soldiers who were on their way to their units north of Baghdad today.
An Iraqi police source said the US soldiers fired at four civilian cars on the Tikrit-Bayji highway in the Al-Hujjaj area. As a result, the four cars were burnt, their occupants were either martyred or injured, and others were arrested.
The source added: After verifying the identity cards of the victims, it became clear that they all belong to the first brigade of the Iraqi army, and that they were leaving for Samarra at the end of their leaves. They were surprised by a US troops convoy travelling in the opposite direction of the highway.
The source noted that the US soldiers fired at the cars, which were travelling in the right direction.
There was no immediate US Army comment on this incident.
