Beijing, 26 January: China's Minister of Foreign Affairs Li Zhaoxing stressed on Thursday [26 January] the importance of using diplomacy to resolve the current standoff on Iran's nuclear programmes.

China very well understands Iran's right to obtain peaceful nuclear technology and it is, in fact, its right to make use of such technology, he noted at a meeting with the visiting Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council Ali Larijani.

China's Li Zhaoxing called on all sides in the nuclear issue to exert their utmost effort to prevent Iran's dossier from being referred to the UN Security Council.

He also underscored the necessity of continuing the current consultations between Iran and China aimed at reaching a peaceful end to the nuclear issue.

China's Li Zhaoxing and Iran's Larijani both agreed that the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) was the best venue for resolving the Iran nuclear issue.

China has always advocated negotiations as the best means of settling the issue, he said.

Larijani is scheduled to hold meetings with top officials of China, including State Councillor Tang Jiaxuan.

Larijani, who heads Iran's negotiating team on the nuclear dispute, arrived in Beijing, China Thursday morning for a one-day official visit.
