MP Says Praises Non-Aligned Countries Support for Iran Nuclear Case

Posted on: Saturday, 4 February 2006, 06:00 CST

Text of report by Iranian radio on 4 February

The International Atomic Energy Agency [IAEA] Board of Governors has failed to reach a consensus vote on Iran's nuclear case, following an objection by the non-aligned member countries [NAM] to its proposed resolution on the subject. The head of the Majlis's National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, Mr Ala'eddin Borujerdi, offers his thoughts on the reasons behind NAM's resistance to Western pressures.

[Borujerdi] The non-aligned members' reason for resisting pressure during last September session and the current meeting of the Board of Governors is firstly to defend one of their active members, and secondly they know that this a political decision on the part of the West. If the West is successful in its campaign against Iran, then it will put pressure on Egypt, Algeria and other NAM member countries. Thirdly, the Islamic republic's position on the issue is in line with international regulations, non- proliferation treaty [NPT] and IAEA's guideline. On the other hand, what the West wants clearly contradicts these rules and regulations. Therefore, it is natural that the NAM member countries support Iran's logical stance which is in line with international regulations. Only Venezuela defended Iran in the September meeting, but despite the increasing pressure on the NAM countries, today Syria and Cuba also support us. West is exerting strong pressure on these countries. We hope that despite all the pressure, the Nam countries succeed in their efforts to prove their point.
