Iran to Resume Nuclear Research Activity Within Two Days - Speaker

Posted on: Sunday, 12 February 2006, 09:00 CST

Text of report by Iranian radio on 12 February

The head of the Majlis has said: Iran will resume its nuclear research activities in the presence of the IAEA [International Atomic Energy Agency] inspectors within the next two days.

Mr Haddad-Adel told parliamentary reporters: The agency's charter provides countries with legal guidelines on how to access nuclear technology. The Majlis Speaker pointed out: What we are asking is why, despite Iran's commitment to the agency's regulations, the domineering powers are still trying to prevent our country from using peaceful nuclear technology.

[Haddad-Adel] What we have always said and will be saying is: Why are the agency's regulations not followed? What is the purpose of establishing the agency if, after a country opens its doors to inspectors and clearly announces that it has no intention of making [nuclear] weapons, you take its right away under the pretext that this capability may lead to manufacturing weapons in the future? So why not change the agency's charter and say that no country has the right to have nuclear technology other than powerful countries which are already in possession of atomic bombs, continue to make bombs and can enable any country they wish to build atomic bombs? In fact our question is this: What should have Iran done to acquire the right to access peaceful nuclear energy? This is an important question and we will insist on this issue in our future negotiations.
