Six Gunmen Killed in US Air Strike on Iraq's Al-Ramadi Area

A statement by the US army said Sunday [12 Feb] that six gunmen were killed and that a US soldier was wounded yesterday when the US forces launched an air strike on Al-Ramadi, west of Baghdad.

In Al-Miqdadiyah, clashes between gunmen and Iraqi army soldiers led to the killing of a gunman. The Iraqi army also arrested 40 suspected gunmen during the same operation.

In the capital Baghdad, police sources said that three members of the Iraqi Police Special Forces and a civilian were killed and four other members of these forces were wounded when a suicide bomber wearing an explosive belt blew himself up near a checkpoint in southern Baghdad.

Police in Baghdad said that 12 civilians were wounded when two roadside bombs went off immediately one after the other near an Iraqi police patrol in central Baghdad.

The police added that two civilians, including a child, were martyred and three others wounded when a bomb went off in the northern part of the capital. The bomb targeted members of the Iraqi Police Special Forces, as the source put it.

In the same city, a US army statement said that a 53-year-old detainee died in the Abu Ghurayb Prison when an unspecified number of detainees attacked him.

In Al-Mahawil, an Iraqi Police statement said that three dead bodies were found tied up and shot in the head and the chest. The statement added that the bodies had signs of torture.

In Al-Iskandariyah, another statement by the Iraqi Police in the city said that two dead bodies were found tied up and shot in the head and the chest in the south of Baghdad. The statement noted that the two bodies had signs of torture.

Meanwhile, four policemen were killed by gunmen as they were riding in a civilian car on the main road between Kirkuk and Tikrit, north of Baghdad.

In Al-Kithl, gunmen wearing police uniforms killed a civilian in the south of Baghdad.

In another development, Iraqi policemen snatched a dead body out of a river near Al-Latifiyah yesterday.

In Ba'qubah, the Diyala Police said that the director of physical education in the governorate was assassinated by unidentified gunmen, north of Baghdad.

Iraqi Police sources said that gunmen kidnapped three truck drivers, who were transporting equipment to a US base in Yathrib, near Balad, north of Baghdad.

In Bayji, gunmen blew up a gas station near the city.
