Haiti: Leading Presidential Candidate Preval Fails to Make Statement to Nation

Posted on: Tuesday, 14 February 2006, 06:00 CST

Port-au-Prince Signal Radio in Creole at 0003 gmt on 14 February reports that several journalists went to the home of presidential candidate Rene Preval in Peguy-Ville this evening because they expected him to make a statement to the nation. However, Preval allegedly said that he could not make a statement before consulting organizations that make up the coalition he represents as a presidential candidate.

At 0017 gmt, announcer Garry Pierre-Paul Charles reports that he went to the home of former President Preval to cover the statement Preval was expected to make today. However, "Preval did not make any statement," says Charles, who announces that details will be provided later.

At 0022 gmt, Charles reports: "We left here and went to Peguy- Ville." He adds: "Partisans and sympathizers [of former President Preval], as well as journalists, were there. The journalists were waiting for the Lespwa leader, who was expected to give a news conference. Once again, the Lespwa leader did not speak. He said that he would speak tomorrow. He sent somebody who came and told us that he would speak tomorrow."
