Afghan Analysts, Spokesman Say Pakistan Clearly Supports Taleban, Terrorism

Posted on: Saturday, 18 February 2006, 15:00 CST

Text of report by Afghan independent Tolo TV on 18 February

[Presenter] Different circles in Afghanistan have given their reaction to the video images of mass killings in northern Waziristan.

Afghan analysts say that the recent events in northern Waziristan are against Islamic values and human rights.

[Correspondent] The images broadcast Friday [17 February] on the evening bulletin of Tolo television showed the alleged mass killing of opponents of the Taleban and Al-Qa'idah.

A number of Afghan analysts believe such activities prove the direct interference of Pakistan in Afghanistan 's internal affairs, and that the Pakistani government does not want to prevent Taleban activities in the region.

[Mohammad Musa Fariwar, analyst] There is no doubt that the groups opposing the government live in the neighbouring countries, including Pakistan. They are supported under different pretexts. The Pakistani government is directly or indirectly responsible for whatever the rebel fighters do.

[Lisa Srosh, analyst] The incident proves the existence of problems in the Pakistani border areas. Situation in the Pakistani border areas, of course, depends on the Pakistani police and the police are naturally linked with the government of that country. We cannot say that Pervez Musharraf or other Pakistani leaders are not aware of their own policies. We therefore can say that Pakistan plays a policy of double-standard.

[Correspondent] A number of Kabul residents say the mass killing in Waziristan further strengthens terrorists.

[A man in Kabul ] Pakistan is the only country which sends terrorists all over the world. I am sure people all around the world have watched the video and this shows how much Pakistan is against stability in Afghanistan.

[Another man] Pakistan fears the resumption of debates on the Durand Line. Pakistani authorities therefore want to keep Afghanistan engaged with terrorism and distract the attention of the Afghan authorities from the Durand Line issue.

[Correspondent] The Afghan president's office says the incident is a threat against countries fighting terrorism.

[Siamak Herawi, deputy spokesman of the president] The video shows that Al-Qa'idah and the Taleban very freely kill people in Waziristan and this is a sign of terrorism in the region. It is not only a video of terrorism and violence, but it is also a threat to all countries fighting terrorism.

[Correspondent] We tried to contact Pakistani diplomats in Kabul for more details, but could not because the embassy was closed.
