Posted on: Sunday, 19 February 2006, 18:00 CST

Iraqi Al-Sharqiyah TV between 1400-2100 gmt has been observed to highlight the following security developments in Iraq on 19 February:

Within its 1400 gmt newscast, Al-Sharqiyah reports that "the Iraqi Police said today that it arrested two gunmen travelling in a car in the centre of the capital, Baghdad".

The police added that they discovered "explosive materials and remote-controlled detonators" in their car and the bomb squad was summoned to defuse the explosive charges.

Al-Sharqiyah also reports that "some 500 employees" working in the hospitals of Al-Amarah, south of Baghdad, staged a demonstration today demanding "a hardship pay" due to the "hazardous working conditions". The "angry" demonstrators gathered in front of the governorate's council carrying placards "denouncing what they described as bourgeoisie and castes in the Iraqi society". They also called on the competent parties to respond to their demands.

Moreover, there were reports that people working in the medical sector in all the governorates of Iraq went on a strike.

In Al-Najaf, south of Baghdad, employees at the medical centres went on a strike in protest against their "low wages and for not receiving a hardship pay". Hundreds of protestors marched in a demonstration which kicked off from Al-Sadr Education Hospital to the governorate's building in the city centre, the report adds.

At 1500 gmt, Al-Sharqiyah carries the following report: "Iraqi Police sources said that two Iraqis were martyred and 10 others were wounded in two suicide bombings carried out in Baghdad today. One of the suicide bombers carried out his attack against the Planning Ministry. Meanwhile, the other carried out his attack near a suspension bridge leading to the Green Zone. The sources indicated that the number of the wounded is expected to rise."

At 1800 gmt, Al-Sharqiyah reports that the Iraqi Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) has announced that the wreckage of a private plane which crashed in Iraq's Kurdistan on 16 February was discovered 53 kilometres north of Sulaymaniyah with six persons dead on board.

Al-Sharqiyah also reports that Husayn al-Bahrani, an official working at Baghdad Secretariat, "escaped an assassination attempt with a booby-trapped car" this evening in Al-Karradah in central Baghdad. The explosion of the car "resulted in wounding two of his guards and causing considerable damage to the nearby buildings".
