MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - A Canadian couple visiting Mexico's Riviera Maya resort for their daughter's wedding have been murdered, possibly by two women, police said on Tuesday.
A 59-year-old man and his 55-year-old wife were killed in their hotel room in the Caribbean vacation area in Quintana Roo state late on Sunday or early on Monday, a source at the local prosecutor's office said.
The victims' "throats were cut, almost ear to ear," the source told Reuters. A hotel employee discovered them on Monday.
Police are investigating two women who checked out of the hotel on Monday but who have not yet been accurately identified, the source said.
The victims had arrived at Barcelo Maya Beach Hotel on Saturday with several other guests in the same travel package.
The two suspected women were not part of the victims' travel group, the source said.
