Russia-Iran Talks Continue in Tehran

February 24, 2006

The head of Russia’s atomic energy agency arrived in Iran early Friday to continue talks aimed at finding a solution to the issue of Iran’s uranium enrichment.

During his three-day visit, Sergei Kiriyenko is scheduled to meet high-level Iranian officials and to visit Bushehr, the site of a nuclear power station that is being built with Russia’s help, ITAR-Tass reported.

The talks are a continuation of meetings held in Moscow Feb. 20 and 21 between Russian and Iranian officials over Russia’s proposal to enrich uranium on Russian territory for Iran’s use — a compromise solution to Iran’s uranium enrichment plans which have brought it in conflict with the International Atomic Energy Agency.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Thursday in Moscow that Kiriyenko’s visit was one more opportunity to resolve the current standoff by diplomatic means, the RIA Novosti news agency reported.
