Feb. 24--PARRISH -- A Palmetto man was arrested this morning in connection with the robbery of a convenience store shortly after midnight.

David D. Conrad, 20, of 1108 25th Ave. West, Palmetto, is being held in the Manatee County Jail, according to a Sheriff's Office press release.

A robber entered the 7-Eleven at 8705 U.S. 301 North, Parrish, placed a brown and gold knife on the counter and said, "How about you give me the cash out of the register," according to the press release.

When the clerk said she had just started working at the store and didn't know how to open the register, the robber said, "Just push the cash button," the press release said.

The victim pressed the button and the cash register opened. The clerk then handed the robber all of the money from the drawer.

The robbery walked calmly out of the store and got into a red pick up truck that was parked on the east side of the store and fled in an unknown direction, the press release said.

Deputies who arrived on the scene learned from dispatch that the Palmetto Police Department were in pursuit of a red truck that matched the description of the suspect vehicle.

Deputies joined Palmetto police officers in the chase, which ended on 35th Avenue West and 9th Street Court West, where the suspect bailed out of the vehicle and fled on foot.

With the help of a K-9 unit, the suspect was found hiding in the bushes behind Zoned Erotica on 301 Boulevard near 1st Street.

Deputies brought one of the store clerks to the location and positively identifed the suspect as the same person who had robbed her.

The suspect confessed to committing the robbery, according to the press release, and the knife was found in the truck. The money was not located.
