Cairo, 4 March: The Arab League Council held its first working session at the ministerial level on Saturday afternoon [4 March] under UAE Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Muhammad Husayn al- Sha'li.
Participants listened to a report by Sudanese Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Al-Samani Wasila on developments in Darfur, especially as the entire issue will be submitted to the African Union within days to decide on who will monitor peace in the restive region.
Also, Palestinian Foreign Minister Nasir al-Qidwa read out a report on the latest developments in the Palestinian lands. He urged Arab countries to continue their assistance to the Palestinian government regardless of who would form it and whether Hamas would form it alone or would need other factions to join in. Al-Qidwa underlined the difficulty of the current stage which needed serious a national dialogue to handle sticky subjects such as resistance and the arms. He added that the dialogue would also handle a political plan that would agree on setting up a Palestinian state next to Israel in accordance with the Arab peace initiative.
