The Defense Department released more than 5,000 pages of documents containing correspondence from Guantanamo Bay detainees to their U.S. captors.

The documents are to be used by detainees in legal challenges to their detention, the Washington Post reports.

They were released as part of a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit. The Pentagon kept some documents private, citing security reasons.

The statements and questions from some 300 detainees range contain a range of claims — including that they were wrongly arrested as they fled U.S. bombings in Afghanistan.

Other detainees said they were fighting the Taliban or just at the wrong place at the wrong time, and expressed their support for the United States.
