Jordanian King urges speedy formation of national government in Iraq
AMMAN, March 7 (Xinhua) -- Jordanian King Abdullah II on Tuesday called on all parties in Iraq to set up as soon as possible a national government that can represent the interests of all Iraqi people.
The Iraqi Shiites, Sunnis and Kurds should join hands and work for a stable Iraq so as to avert possible sectarian clashes, local media quoted King Abdullah as saying when meeting with visiting Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshiar al-Zibari.
The Jordanian monarch expressed a deep concern over the turbulent situation in the war-torn nation and called on all Iraqi people to jointly safeguard national unity and fight against those trying to stir up hatred and violence.
The king restated his pledge to continue supporting and assisting the Iraqi people, and said he would discuss with the Arab League about holding a meeting of leaders of all Iraqi religious factions in Amman in a bid to safeguard Iraq's national unity and stability.
Zibari, for his part, thanked the Jordanian King and government for their support and help to the Iraqi people and their efforts to help safeguard Iraq's national unity and territorial integrity.
He welcomed the king's proposal for convening in Jordan a meeting of all Iraqi religious leaders, and briefed him on the progress made toward forming a new government in Iraq.
