Seoul, 9 March: Two short-range North Korean missiles fired into the Sea of Japan on Wednesday [8 March] are seen as part of routine training exercises, Yonhap News Agency quoted a South Korean military source as saying Thursday.
"A serious meaning needs not to be attached to the firing of short-range missiles. (North Korea launches) as part of annual training around this time of every year," the source said.
The source added North Korea is still abiding by its moratorium on the firing of mid-and long-range missiles.
Meanwhile, an anonymous South Korean government official said in the Yonhap report the missiles were launched into the Sea of Japan from a coastal unit near Hamhung, South Hamkyong Province on the east coast.
"The missiles fired this time are believed to be similar to KN- 02, an improved version of former Soviet Union-made SS-21 surface- to-surface missiles, with a firing range of 100-120 kilometres," the South Korean official said.
