Iran Nuclear Issue Divides United Nations

The Iran nuclear dispute is before the 15-member U.N. Security Council after Russia and China refused to support a proposal to put more pressure on Iran.

The issue moved to the Security Council after several days of talks failed to produce an agreement among the five permanent members, reports the Financial Times.

Now Britain and France are seeking a statement from the full council calling on Iran to suspend uranium enrichment efforts.

The council also would be asked to urge Iran to give the International Atomic Energy Agency access to individuals, documentation relating to procurement, dual use equipment, certain military owned workshops and research and development locations, the Times reported.

China and Russia feel the draft goes too far without much room for diplomatic efforts with IAEA taking the lead.
