Amman, 16 March: Foreign Minister Abd-al-Ilah al-Khatib affirmed Jordan's keenness on the formation of a national unity government in Iraq, that preserves the unity of its land and people and contribute to ending the current tragic situation in Iraq.
"Jordan has relations with all segments of the Iraqi society and there are continues contacts with them to hold meetings in Jordan under the royal patronage for religious leaderships in Iraq soon," Al-Khatib said in a press meeting organized by Centre for the Protection and Freedom of Journalists last night.
The minister said that the Iraqi meeting will be an occasion to focus on elements of unity, expressing hope that this would positively reflect on the political situation in Iraq.
He said that the upcoming meeting derives its principles from the Amman International Islamic Conference, which was held last year, and which focused on the relationship between the different sects.
"Jordan looks forward to the formation of a Palestinian government that fulfils aspirations of the Palestinian people and respect their will to establish an independent state without which the region will not enjoy stability," Al-Khatib added. He pointed out that results of the Palestinian elections are deemed a considerable progress, hoping that the Palestinian Resistance Movement, Hamas would express aspirations of the Palestinian people.
Al-Khatib also voiced hope that results of the Israeli elections will push the peace process forward and help in resuming negotiations with the Palestinian.
On the Israeli prisoners in Israeli jails, the foreign minister said that efforts to release the prisoners did not stop, noting that 84 Jordanians were released since the opening of the Jordanian Embassy in Tel Aviv.
The minister said that Jordan follows up developments of Arab issues, particularly the Palestinian and Iraqi ones and that it makes continuous contacts with the EU and the United States on the two issues.
