Text of editorial by M Hamedani, entitled: "Giving an advantage to India, humiliating Pakistan and the consequences of Americanism by Iranian weekly Shoma on 11 March
The American president's trip to the three Asian countries of India, Pakistan and Afghanistan attracted the world's attention. Because of the issues that relate India and Pakistan to our country, the America president's trips to these two countries are of greater importance. Pakistan is an Islamic country that enjoys nuclear power, is Iran's neighbour and has close relations with America. India, too, is a nuclear country that has disputes with Pakistan and is also considered by America as a rival to control China.
Iran's nuclear file has increased the importance of these two countries - that are both members of the nuclear club - for America; especially, India's vote, as an unaligned country in the Board of Governors, is very much to America's interest. Bush's trip to these three countries had also one thing in common. The popular protests in these three countries - and especially in India and Pakistan - showed once again that the American authorities are still being hated by the people of the world.
Bush tried to take advantage of the disagreements between these three countries in favour of his own interests. He tried to create disagreement between the authorities of the occupied Afghanistan, the dependent Pakistan and the greedy India; just as the debate between Pakistan and Afghanistan over supporting terrorism was intensified after Bush's trip.
Bush's method in this trip was to bribe India. Bush promised the prime minister of India to have nuclear cooperation with this country; and this is unprecedented in the history of America's relations with non-aligned countries. Even Pakistan, as a country following America that has also close cooperation with this country, tried to have a share of this kind of promises, but was faced with Bush's humiliating answer, saying that Pakistan should not compare itself with India! [Exclamation mark as published]
Bush's trip to India and Pakistan showed once again that the first priority of the American government is the interests of the American rulers and that friendships, strategic relations and special relations are easily sacrificed for these interests. This is another experience; the Americanists and those who ask Iran to establish friendly relations with America should pay attention to the point that if Iran had established friendly relations with America, even in the level of Pakistan, the American president would have talked to them in such a humiliating way.
In addition to hating Muslims, America prefers India over Pakistan because it believes that it can reduce Iran's power by giving advantages to India. Competing with China, America is intending to strengthen India; and as a matter of fact, America giving advantages to India does not mean that it respects this country.
It is known that the Westerners' foreign policy is to achieve permanent interests and that their friendships and enmities are not permanent. Therefore it would be a mistake for the Indians to believe that Bush's friendly remarks and promises are forever.
The Islamic Republic of Iran's complaint against India is reserved; although receiving advantages in return for confronting Iran might provide them with limited temporary benefits, it does not protect their permanent interests in the region. The Islamic Republic's fundamental policy is to keep its independence; and this independence-seeking policy has made America give other countries advantages to confront it. The end of Pakistan's friendship with America was Pakistan's humiliation and the end of India obtaining advantages from America will also be something similar. The principle-ist and independence-seeking policy will be forever.
