The following is a selection of quotes from editorials published in 20 Mar editions of Urdu-language Pakistan newspapers available to BBCM.
Anti-US demonstrations
Mashriq [Peshawar; commercial]:
"The worldwide demonstrations on the third anniversary of the US occupation of Iraq are enough to prove how the free world regards the US attack on Iraq. In our view, the USA should act upon the demands of the protestors, who say the war on terror should be ended; coalition forces should be withdrawn from Iraq and there should be no aggression against Iran. This is the voice of people around the world who love freedom and justice. The USA must bear in mind that it can never succeed in maintaining its occupation over Iraq against the will of Iraqis."
Ausaf [Islamabad; pro-Islamabad]:
"The protest demonstrations show that the wild US action is not lauded anywhere in the world, including the USA, Europe and Asia. Despite this, the US president is inspired to continue the war. He is also determined to attack Iran at the behest of the oil mafia. In our view, in the present situation it is the responsibility of the American people to remove their rulers so that the world may be saved from their barbarism, because the flames rising in different parts of the world would ultimately reach the USA."
Express [Peshawar; commercial]:
"It is our view that even now President Bush should admit his mistakes, withdraw his forces from Iraq and Afghanistan and put the affairs of these countries under the direct supervision of the UN. If he does so, normality may be expected to return to these countries. But if Mr. Bush maintains his stubbornness, the situation in these countries will deteriorate further and the entire world will fall under the grip of lawlessness, for which President Bush will bear the blame."
Khabrain [Peshawar; commercial]:
"We hope that the US authorities will act wisely in view of the realities on the ground and withdraw its forces from Iraq. We say they should not hesitate to give the people of Iraq their rights because the solution to the issue is not the use of force but a peaceful transfer of power."
US-Indian nuclear cooperation agreement
Khabrain [Peshawar; commercial]:
"Several members of the US Congress have demanded changes in the US-Indian nuclear technology cooperation agreement, while several others have urged that it be scrapped. We hope the US Congress will look thoroughly into this agreement before approving it. Pakistan should also mobilize its lobby in this regard."
