Seoul, March 20: Embattled South Korean stem cell researcher Hwang Woo-suk was dismissed from his university on Monday [20 March].
The decision by the Seoul National University (SNU) comes as the latest blow to the disgraced professor who has been under investigation by prosecutors over his alleged involvement in the fabrication of research data used in his papers.
In a 2005 paper published by US journal Science, Hwang and his team claimed to have cloned 11 of the world's first patient- tailored stem cells, a scientific claim that generated hope for the treatment of people with previously-incurable diseases and ailments.
The paper, however, was retracted in January, along with a 2004 paper in which Hwang claimed to have cloned a human embryo and extracted stem cells from it.
The university's disciplinary panel also decided to either suspend or reduce the salaries of six other professors involved in the cloning research project for periods ranging from one month to three months.
