Iraqi TV Updates Security Developments, Casualties on 21 March

Al-Sharqiyah Television between 0900 and 1200 gmt on 21 March highlighted the following security developments in Iraq:

Within its 0900 gmt news bulletin, Al-Sharqiyah reports that "20 Iraqi policemen are believed to be martyred this morning in an attacked against their police station in Al-Miqdadiyah, northeast of Baghdad".

The report adds that gunmen attacked the police centre in the city with RPGs, mortars and machine-guns. The initial reports say that "14 policemen were martyred" in addition to two others, whose bodies were found in the court building which was also attacked, the report notes.

Al-Sharqiyah also reports that a suicide bomber attacked a checkpoint with a booby-trapped car in Al-Qatun area, southwest of Ba'qubah. The explosion, which took place on the afternoon of 20 March, resulted in the "martyrdom" of a policeman and wounded another, the report explains.

Al-Sharqiyah also reports that a bomb placed inside a bag went off in one of the popular coffee shops in Al-Kasrah in Al-Azamiyah area, north of Baghdad. The explosion, which took place yesterday afternoon, resulted in the "martyrdom of three customers and wounding 22 others", the report adds.

Furthermore, Al-Sharqiyah reports that a KIA car was detonated in front of a restaurant in Al-Mashtal area, west of Baghdad. The report notes that the explosion, which took place yesterday afternoon, resulted in the "martyrdom of three civilians and wounding four others".

At 1100 gmt Al-Sharqiyah reports that gunmen "managed to release 32 prisoners from Al-Miqdadiyah Police Station" following a "fierce battle" with security men.

US and Iraqi sources said that the investigation files of the Major Crime Department, which is specialized in following up legal actions against gunmen, were "totally incinerated". A number of vehicles were also torched in front of the police station, the report explains.
