European News IN BRIEF: Chirac Signs Youth Job Law
April 3, 2006
PARIS President Jacques Chirac has signed into law a contested measure to promote jobs for youths, even though he has said it would be replaced by a modified version to defuse a crisis that has led to violent demonstrations. However, unions hoped that another round of strikes and demonstrations tomorrow would provide a push to get the measure withdrawn. The governing party’s leader in the lower house, Bernard Accoyer, said he would meet union leaders to speak with critics before a new bill is written. Previous efforts at dialogue have failed.
