Leftists win Slovak vote but no majority: exit poll
June 17, 2006
BRATISLAVA (Reuters) – Slovakia’s leftist Smer party won an
election on Saturday, but pro-reform Prime Minister Mikulas
Dzurinda could yet stay in power if he joins forces with other
centre-right parties, an exit poll showed.
The exit poll, carried out for TV channel Markiza,
projected Smer as the strongest single party on 27.2 percent of
votes. Dzurinda’s party won 19.0 percent but the combined total
for his party and two possible centre-right allies was 39.4
percent.
Smer leader Robert Fico has vowed to reverse many of the
reforms carried out by Dzurinda, who led the former communist
nation into the European Union in 2004. Fico says the reforms
have benefited only the rich.
