British police arrest 2 in anti-terrorism raids

June 27, 2006

LONDON (Reuters) – Two men were arrested on Tuesday during
a series of anti-terrorism raids in northern England, a police
spokesman said.

They were detained during early morning searches of about
six addresses in the Bolton area, near Manchester.

“The operation is targeting individuals suspected of
possession of information that could be used for a terrorist
purpose,” Greater Manchester Police said.

About 250 officers took part in the raids, which were not
linked to other recent anti-terrorism operations. No armed
police were involved.

Police have been on alert as the anniversary approaches of
the July 7, 2005 suicide bombings in London which killed 52
commuters.

Earlier this month, a 21-year-old man was held at
Manchester Airport and later charged with two terrorism
offences.
