Israeli Air Strike Kills 7, Wounds Dozens

Posted on: Wednesday, 12 July 2006, 03:00 CDT

Israeli warplanes struck a house in Gaza Wednesday morning, and officials believe a reputed terrorist leader was among those wounded.

The Jerusalem Post, citing Palestinian sources, said at least seven people were killed, including two children, and dozens more were injured. The two-story house collapsed in the air attack.

The attack also apparently wounded Muhamad Deif. The BBC said he is a Hamas bomb-maker who has been on Israel's most-wanted list for more than 10 years. He is accused of masterminding suicide bomb attacks.

His condition was not known.

The Post said the air strike came as Israeli troops crossed the border into central Gaza for the first time.

Israel entered Gaza two weeks ago after a 19-year-old Israeli soldier was kidnapped from a border unit. Israeli officials have rejected any negotiations until Cpl Gilad Shalit is released.
