August 17, 2006
One person was killed and 60 people are missing following a volcano eruption some 80 miles south of Quito, El Comercio reported Thursday.
Tungurahua began erupting Wednesday evening and spewed molten lava and ash during the night. Though hundreds managed to be evacuated, some 60 people remain missing.
Ecuadorian President Alfredo Palacio is scheduled to visit the towns surrounding the volcano.
Experts said that while activity has diminished since the initial eruption, it could increase.
