Hurricane Paul Nearing West Mexico
October 24, 2006
Hurricane Paul dropped to a Category 1 hurricane as it approached west Mexico’s Baja California peninsula early Tuesday, U.S. forecasters reported.
Sustained winds fell from 100 mph to 80 mph and a hurricane watch for the southern part of Baja was reduced to a tropical storm warning by the Mexican government at 2 a.m. PDT.
A tropical storm watch was posted for western mainland Mexico from Mazatlan to Altata as the storm moved north at 8 mph from its center, 315 miles south-southwest of Cabo San Lucas.
Forecasters at the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said further weakening was expected Tuesday as Paul makes a gradual turn to the northeast with an increase in forward speed.
