Explosion Traps 35 Coal Miners in China

October 31, 2006

A gas explosion Tuesday in a coal mine in China’s northwest Gansu province has trapped at least 35 miners underground, Xinhua news agency reported.

The explosion occurred in Baiyin City’s Weijiadi coal mine, operated by the state-owned Jingyuan Coal Industry Corp. The report said four miners managed to escape unhurt.

The mine’s general manager was quoted as saying the mine’s safety monitoring device stopped when the explosion occurred.

Xinhua reported that rescue operations are under way and that the cause of the explosion is being investigated.
