Five Die in Bridge Collapse in India
December 2, 2006
Five people died and 21 were injured when a 150-year-old bridge collapsed onto a passenger train near Bhagalpur, India Saturday.
A portion of the bridge’s arch and pillar that were being dismantled collapsed onto a sleeper car, Railway Minister Lalu Prasad told the Press Trust of India.
Two engineers supervising the bridge project were suspended and an investigation was launched that could result in legal charges against them, Prasad said.
Families of the dead will be given money and offered jobs, Prasad said, adding the railway would also cover medical treatment for the injured.
A train from Jamalpur was sent to the crash site to take passengers to their destinations.
