New Wave of Iraq Violence Kills 12
January 7, 2007
At least 12 people died in a series of attacks in Iraq Sunday — one day after Prime Minister al-Nouri Maliki pledged to boost security.
In addition, the Iraqi army killed 30 militants in Baghdad Sunday, an army spokesman told the BBC.
A car bomb in Hilla, south of Baghdad, killed one person and injured a dozen more. An attack on an education ministry official killed two of his bodyguards, and four civilians died from gunshot wounds in central Baghdad during Sunday’s violence.
Maliki’s security plan calls for Iraqi troops to fight sectarian violence, with U.S. troops on call if are needed.
An American security contractor went missing Friday and two Iraqi interpreters who were working with him were found dead in Basra, the BBC said.
