Venezuela: Chavez Sworn in to 3rd Term
January 10, 2007
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez was sworn in Wednesday to a third term in office, promising to complete his socialist revolution.
The ever-outspoken Chavez said he dedicated his whole life to promoting socialist ideals and would spend the next six years completing his effort to turn Venezuela into a socialist state, Globovision TV reported.
After taking the oath, Chavez said he would ask Venezuelan lawmakers to give him the authority to rule by decree and revoke the law against term limits for presidents.
Critics of the president say he is trying to turn Venezuela into a Cuba-style state.
