Six Die in Canary Island Tunnel
February 11, 2007
Six people are presumed dead after getting lost while exploring a tunnel on the island of Tenerife, one of the Canary Islands.
Local authorities said the six probably died from lack of oxygen in the tunnel, which was dug about 200 years ago.
A group of 30 people, including scientists, went into the tunnel system Saturday but got lost after they took a wrong turn, the BBC reported
After one person managed to get out and alert authorities, 23 survivors were rescued. The other six were presumed dead.
Among the tunnel explorers were scientists from the Canary Islands Astrophysics Institute and members of the Tenerife Friends of Nature Association.
