The World: Parties Gain Ground
March 9, 2007
THE Democratic Unionists and Sinn Fein were expected to make more gains in Northern Ireland’s Assembly Election when counting resumed today in nine of the 18 constituencies.
At the end of the first day’s counts, the Rev Ian Paisley and Gerry Adams built up a considerable lead over their unionist and nationalist rivals in the battle for Stormont seats. With 72 of the 108 seats declared, the DUP led with 25 Assembly members while Sinn Fein had 24.
