EU Committed to Israel, Merkel Says
April 1, 2007
German Chancellor Angela Merkel assured Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert Germany and the European Union are committed to the safety of Israeli citizens.
Merkel offered the assurance after visiting Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial Museum and Hebrew University in Jerusalem, YNetNews reported. Olmert lauded Merkel’s efforts to promote the release of kidnapped soldiers, as well as her efforts at strengthening ties between Israel and Germany.
Merkel said endorsing the two-state solution for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict requires recognition of Israel’s right to exist and the renouncing of violence.
Merkel was awarded an honorary doctor degree from Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
