Nine U.S. soldiers were killed and 20 injured when two suicide car bombs exploded at a patrol base in Diyala province in Iraq, the U.S. military said.

The military said that all of the soldiers killed Monday were members of the Army’s 82nd Airborne, based in Fort Bragg, N.C., CNN reported.

Today represents the single greatest loss of life for soldiers from Fort Bragg in more than five years of simultaneous deployment, base spokesman U.S. Army Maj. Tom Earnhardt told CNN.

The military said that 15 of the wounded soldiers later returned to duty and five were transported to a medical facility.

The military also announced the death of another U.S. soldier in Diyala province Monday in a roadside bombing.

Monday’s attack on the U.S. base came at the end of a day of attacks that killed more than 40 people across Iraq, the BBC reported.

On Tuesday in Baghdad, CNN reported two car bombs exploded in Baghdad near the Iranian Embassy, injuring at least four people, police and witnesses said.
