Israel to Transfer Funds to Palestinians
July 1, 2007
The Israeli Cabinet voted Sunday to begin transferring about $400 million in tax funds to the Palestinian Authority.
The transfer is part of Israel’s efforts to bolster Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, Ynetnews.com reported.
Israel plans to transfer the money in payments during the next six months, with the first payment coming Sunday, Ynetnews.com said. The money was collected in taxes from Palestinians during the last year and a half.
The international community lifted a financial embargo against the authority three weeks ago after Hamas ousted Abbas and his more moderate Fatah party from Gaza.
