Twins Sue Over Separation at Birth

Posted on: Wednesday, 28 May 2008, 12:00 CDT

Twin sisters separated at birth 35 years ago because of an error at a state-run hospital are suing the government of Spain for millions of dollars.

The sisters didn't realize an error had been made until they met by chance in the Canary Islands in 2001, Sky News reported Wednesday.

DNA tests proved they were identical twins.

The lawyer for one of the twins says his client was placed in the wrong bassinet shortly after she and her sister were born at a state-run hospital in 1973.

As a result, she was raised by the parents of the newborn who was mistakenly placed in the bassinet next to her twin sister.

All three girls are suing over the error.

Attorney Sebastian Socorro Perdromo says a verdict in the case is expected soon.

It does not take a lot of effort to put yourself in the position of any of these people in order to understand the damage that his been done, he said.
