Girl Who Gave Birth in Toilet Charged

A Texas eighth-grader was charged Thursday with killing the baby boy she gave birth to in a school toilet.
Prosecutors had not yet decided whether to charge the 14-year-old as an adult or a juvenile, the Houston Chronicle reported. If convicted of murder as an adult, she could be sentenced to life with no parole, while a juvenile conviction could mean a 40-year term.
Police Capt. Roger Clifford said the girl was being held in juvenile detention.
The girl delivered the baby April 2 in a bathroom at Cedar Bayou Junior School. Her lawyer, Gerald Yoakum, said she had been to the nurse's office complaining of cramps and the nurse had her lie down with a heating pad and then sent her back to class. Yoakum said the girl did not know she was pregnant.
Please remember that this is a 14-year-old child who has experienced a tragic event, Yoakum said.
Police said the boy was born alive and drowned. They said he showed signs of blunt force trauma and had toilet paper in his throat.
